We are all born with 5 senses: sight, sound, touch, smell and taste, usually listed in that order. But is the sense of smell really number four? What do the expressions ‘Can’t get it passed my nose’ or ‘Follow your nose’ say about the sense of smell?
To me, the sense of smell should be tied for first place with sight. I remember the aroma of my grandmother’s meatloaf that filled her entire house. I’d be climbing the walls with anticipation, knowing how good it would taste just from the way the house smelled. For those who grew up near West Chester, how about the memorable smells of the Downingtown Farmers Market!
Would a Summer rain shower affect you the same way if it didn’t have that fresh, ‘wet’ scent? Sometimes just looking at a picture can bring back the ‘scent’ what you are seeing. Whether it’s a picture of a flower, a place or even a person. And oh, how the sense of smell can trigger so many memories. How often have you heard someone ask, ‘Did you smell that? That smell reminds me of…”. A treasured childhood memory or a favorite food, or vacation spot!
Then there’s the aroma and sound of cooking bacon. Need I say more?!.
Where do you think the sense of smell should fall in the order of our senses? Which scents trigger your memories of long ago people, places or things? Do you have a favorite scent or fragrance that brightens your mood and makes your day Sprightlier?
Please take a moment to share your thoughts top 5 scents with us. The following are my top five Sprightly scents: Freshly bloomed roses, fresh-brewed coffee, meatloaf, cinnamon scented pine cones and a Christmas scented candle.
